What the poems are about
The book does not set out to explain or judge what it means to live as a man in Korea. Instead it looks in turn at a father, a soldier, and men in youth, middle age and old age, and at the feelings and responsibilities they have grown used to keeping to themselves.
For the author, writing it was a way of looking back at himself and of trying to understand lives he has not yet lived. He does not claim the poems can speak for anyone. He hoped that readers, and audiences when he performed them, who carry a similar silence might recognise themselves for a moment.
The poems neither dramatise men’s pain nor ask the reader to act. They show, slowly, how feelings that were never said aloud became private, and then how they turned out to be shared by many people.

Poems in the collection include 할아버지의 아침뉴스 (“Grandfather’s morning news”), 노약자석 (“Priority seat”), 제주도 (“Jeju Island”), 졸업식 (“Graduation”), 3호선 (“Line 3”) and “Voice Memo Deleted”.
