“이야기는 색깔 하나에서 시작됐다. 역사 이야기와 그림 그리기를 좋아하는 박하람(NLCS 제주 12학년) 학생에게 ‘색이라는 렌즈로 역사를 읽어보면 어떨까’라는 질문이 생긴 것은 자연스러운 일이었다.”
The feature follows Haram Jackson Park, a Year 12 student at NLCS Jeju, from a first phone call to Hongnyeomjang Master Kim Gyeong-yeol in Bukchon to learning safflower dyeing in his studio, and to introducing Korean daehong red and indigo to the Forbes Pigment Collection at Harvard Art Museums.

Written after the 9th “Safflower Dyeing Journey to the Joseon Era” workshop, the column describes how Jackson (Haram) Park came to the field to prepare a paper on safflower dyeing, and reads his research as a sign that traditional culture can pass to the next generation.

“박하람은 시집 〈나 또한 그의 이름으로 산다〉를 쓰고, 그 시들을 직접 Spoken Words 퍼포먼스로 옮긴 학생이다.”
The poems look in turn at the lives of fathers, soldiers, young, middle-aged and older men in Korea, and at the feelings and responsibilities that are rarely spoken aloud. Jackson Park also performed them as spoken word.
Red and the Record: Archive Ecology and the Historiography of Color in Korea

From Bukchon to Harvard
Jackson Park asked the Seoul city government to reissue the out-of-print book on Master Kim Gyeong-yeol, sent copies to universities and museums including Yale, Oxford, Cambridge, Princeton, Columbia, SOAS, the Smithsonian and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and helped prepare a UNESCO intangible heritage proposal.
